Pennsylvania just recently declared that there is a major opioid crisis taking place in the state, like there is in many other places across the United States. In 2017, there were about 1,200 overdose-related deaths in Philadelphia alone. In response to these astonishing numbers, the city of Philadelphia announced that they will support the opening of safe injection sites throughout the city. The logic is that if people are injecting drugs in a safe location, there will be fewer overdoses and deaths related to overdoses. No other city in the United States has built a safe injection site, though many are starting to discuss the matter. Seattle, Washington is beginning the process of setting up a safe injection site as well.
The safe injection sites will allow individuals to use opioids under the supervision of medical professionals who can give overdose reversal drugs like Narcan, if necessary. Of course, many people are opposed to opening safe injection sites, arguing that this is a violation of federal law and that no matter where they are being injected, the drugs are still dangerous.
It will be interesting to see the impacts that these safe injection sites have and whether the rates of addiction and overdoses actually decrease. If you have been arrested for possession of a controlled substance, contact our firm today.
